Banksy’s ‘Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill’

Live leopard in a tree may not seem too farfetched for a pet store but give it a closer look and there’s something weird going on in there.

Chicken nugget chicks sipping BBQ sauce, a bunny applying makeup, and CCTV birds? Odd. Upon further inspection everything set up inside the ‘Pet Store’ is automated to move in response to your motion.
This was an exhibit Banksy set up in October of 2008. In typical Banksy style he opened it in secrecy and let the people discover it for themselves.
Banksy had this to say about the ‘Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill’:
“New Yorkers don’t care about art, they care about pets. So I’m exhibiting them instead. I wanted to make art that questioned our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming, but it ended up as chicken nuggets singing. I took all the money I made exploiting an animal in my last show and used it to fund a new show about the exploitation of animals. If its art and you can see it from the street, I guess it could still be considered street art.”

Banksy Hunt
We tried to track down some of the Banksy pieces around Toronto today. Only came across this one.
Pretty legendary nonetheless.
Banksy in Toronto
Looks as if Banksy pieces have popped up around the Toronto area recently. With Bansky’s recent spike in popularity there has also been a rise in impostors. Are these the real deal? I guess we’ll never know. I’ve seen photos of 3 GTA Banksy pieces so far.
